Tracking Your Bike Box During Flights

I was always worried about losing my bike and gear when flying specially with connecting flight. And with the airlines insurance for lose or damage wouldn’t even cover one of my carbon wheels.

With an increasing number of reported cases of lost or mishandled bikes, keeping track of your valuable gear is more crucial than ever. Enter Apple AirTags – the game-changing solution for ensuring the safety of your bike box throughout your flights.

Simply attach an AirTag to bike and pack the box, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing that you can keep an eye on its whereabouts at all times.

The AirTag’s precision tracking allows you to monitor your bike box’s journey from check-in to destination, right from your iPhone or iPad

Spoke Storage Made Simple

Bike spokes and nipples are essential for a successful and enjoyable long-distance Bikepacking Adventure. The key factor lies in the quality of your wheel assembly and your commitment to regular maintenance while touring. For instance, checking the tension weekly is vital.

It’s always a good idea to carry spare spokes and nipples to be fully prepared for any replacements needed during the trail journey.

To save space and protect the spares spokes from the elements, wrap them in a plastic zip-lock bag, tape them together, and store them inside the seat post. This way, you won’t occupy valuable space, and they’ll remain safeguarded throughout the adventure.

Fuel Bottle and Cooker Flying

“I wish I had known this; it would have saved me over $260! When preparing for my First Bikepacking trip, I meticulously packed all my gear, including my cook set and an empty fuel bottle, into the bike box. However, my plans hit a snag at the check-in counter. I was directed to the oversized baggage area, where officials inspected my bike box, only to inform me that I couldn’t bring the fuel bottle or my expensive multi-fuel cooker because they detected the smell of petrol.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to clean it on the spot, and I had already wasted over an hour dealing with the situation. As a result, they decided to keep my items. A valuable lesson learned: Always ensure that your cooker and fuel bottle are thoroughly cleaned and free from any petrol odor before packing them away for travel.

Taking this precaution can save you from unnecessary hassles and disappointments during your journey. So, remember to clean your gear thoroughly to avoid any last-minute setbacks at the airport.

10

Shelter Making the Right Choice

When choosing your shelter, consider these essential factors as your tent will become your home away from home. Look for a 2-person tent, even when traveling solo, as the extra space proves beneficial. Aim for a weight under 2 kilograms to ensure easy portability. Make sure the tent has a sufficient vestibule for cooking and storage, accommodating items like panniers.

Opt for a tent capable of handling all four seasons, including extreme summer heat, strong gusts of wind, and heavy snow loads. The color should aid in stealth camping, blending with the surroundings. Additionally, look for a tent that can be set up with just the inner for sleeping under the stars on hot summer nights. It’s crucial to choose a tent with strong poles, as they often break even on high-quality tents, and one that can be set up in the rain without getting the inner wet.

Prioritize safety above all; select a sturdy tent that will endure heavy storms. For me, after trying out many shelters, I decided on a hot tent that meets all these requirements. The only downside was that it’s not freestanding, but it hasn’t been a problem in over 3 years.

11

Battery Banks

Battery Banks

I initially purchased a 26000mAh Anker battery bank, which still functions well. However, I realized its imperfections for bikepacking after 6 months due to potential failure and a 6-hour, 26000mAh charging time.

My solution, adopted for 4 years, involves buying 4 waterproof 10000mAh batteries. I charge them simultaneously using a 100W Ugreen USB-C charger, granting me 40000mAh in under 3 hours. The advantage is that even if one battery fails, I still have 30000mAh available. Their ruggedness and waterproof nature make them ideal for challenging bikepacking in any weather.

12

Camping and Bike Safety:

Here’s a useful trick I’ve discovered: I tie my bike to the tent’s guy lines at night . These lines are thin and practically invisible, making it difficult for anyone to spot them. This way, if someone attempts to steal my bike, the slight movement of the tent would wake me up immediately and kill them all and buried their bodies in the desert.

This setup has worked great over the years. Occasionally, I’ve had to purchase a few shovels since digging a shallow grave with a potty trowel takes too long, but it’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind.

13

Banking While Bike Touring

Banking can be quite a challenge, especially with the various fees and inconveniences that traditional banks and exchange places impose. On my first trip, I made the mistake of using my local bank, and the ATM fees drained my funds significantly. I then resorted to carrying more cash than I’d like to avoid those charges. However, the exchange places claiming 0% fees turned out to be BS, as they used unfavorable exchange rates.

In my work in the tourist industry, I witnessed numerous travelers struggling to contact their banks to cancel lost or stolen cards. It was a hassle trying to arrange for a new card to be sent to their hostels, and many had to rely on friends and family to send money via Western Union.

Thankfully, I discovered a much better solution – Wise banking online. Originally used for travel, I now rely on it for all my banking needs. One of the main advantages is the ease of opening bank accounts in different countries with just a click, allowing me to have over 60 bank accounts in various currencies. When I travel to a specific country, I transfer money from my UK account to the corresponding account, making it convenient to use my card for ATM withdrawals and payments without worrying about excessive fees.

Furthermore, Wise’s online platform proved to be incredibly efficient when I misplaced my card. Within seconds, I froze the card online without the need to call anyone. In no time, I created a virtual credit card for booking a hotel for the night. Fortunately, I found my misplaced card later and unfroze it quickly.

Aside from its travel benefits, I also use Wise for my PayPal and Google AdSense deposits. It has streamlined my banking experience, providing me with greater flexibility and ease while traveling and conducting financial transactions.

Tools

The first step is to identify the tools you’ll need for bike-packing tour. The simple way to know what tools to take is work on your bike with your world tour tool kit at home if your relying on tools in your toolbox in the shed to work on your bike then you clearly don’t have all the tools to fixed or maintain your bike in the middle of nowhere

With a well-prepared travel tool kit and experience , you’ll be able to fix and replace parts even during your remote location ie in the middle of nowhere.

To ensure a smooth world bike tour, take the time to familiarize yourself with your bike. If possible, consider building your own touring bike, as it will help you understand every part of it. However, if you’re using a pre-assembled bike, make sure to learn how to do the necessary maintenance yourself there lots of video on YouTube and a few good app on bike maintance , which will save you time and money.

When I arrive at a hotel, if they refuse to let me take my bike to the room, I politely inform them that I cannot stay and cancel my booking. I mention that my bike is worth over $15,000 and inquire if their insurance covers any potential loss or damage to it. I request an official document on headed paper, signed by the hotel, stating that they will cover any such loss or damage sign by GM.

Interestingly, most hotels, including luxurious ones like Hilton resorts, are usually willing to make an exception and allow the bike in the room once you assert this preference.

It’s a rule I never break, and it has worked for me on multiple occasions from 1 star to 5 star hotels. The truth is that hotels are often eager for business and are more likely to accommodate such requests.

Shopping And Bike Safety:

To be honest, I dislike shopping for food, especially when it means my bike will be out of sight, especially in big stores like Walmart or Tesco. However, I’ve found a solution that works for me. I usually shop every Sunday, buying a lot of items 7 days worth of main supplies , and it takes me about an hour to navigate through the store special if the store not in English.

To avoid shopping on an empty stomach, I first visit a bar with my bike, explaining that it’s expensive, and I prefer not to leave it on the street. The bar staff is usually understanding and allows me to bring it in. There, I enjoy a few beers, order some food for lunch, and upload my weekly YouTube video.

After lunch, I inform the bar staff that I need to get a new SIM card from the shopping mall across the street, and they agree to let me leave my bike there until I return. This way, my bike remains secure while I take my time to shop and search for deals. Once I finish shopping, I come back to the bar, order a few more beers, and everything works out well.

Once a week, I treat myself to a sit-down meal at a local place, especially to experience the local food culture when I visit a new town. I search for a restaurant with outdoor seating where I can sit beside my bike, as it can be challenging to bring the bike inside. While enjoying the meal, I take the opportunity to charge my battery banks and gadgets fully, which usually takes about three hours, including dessert.

If I can’t find a suitable restaurant, I resort to the drive-through option and charge my devices at the local library. This way, I ensure a pleasant dining experience while keeping my bike safe and my gadgets powered up.
